Güven Kargın is a Turkish guitarist who entertained fellow passengers on a ship by playing Leyenda Asturias. There’s no denying boat trips can be a lot of fun. It could be a fishing trip with friends, a cruise, or a party boat for a special occasion. However, when it’s nighttime, the ship is your mode of transportation, and you’re just trying to get home, some of the fun seeps away. Turkish guitar master Güven Kargın decided to do something about it.
He was sitting alone among all the other passengers. He didn’t draw any kind of attention to himself or try to attract a crowd. He simply took out his guitar and began to play. Onlookers looked on in amazement at the beauty of his playing and also by the speed of his fingerwork.
The intricacy and beauty of his playing, as well as his skill, would be obvious to even the most tone-deaf of listeners. It brought smiles to the faces of even the weariest travellers, and Güven’s performance was applauded warmly at the end.
Leyenda Asturias was originally written for the piano in 1892 by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz before being adapted for the guitar by the classical guitarist Francisco Tárrega. Since then, it has become a key piece of music in the repertoire of classical guitar.
It has also been used in other, quite diverse, genres of music. The Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger included a reworking of the melody in the band’s song “Spanish Caravan”. The famous metal band Iron Maiden also played a small section of it in one of their songs, Mother Russia.
It’s no wonder then that since this version was uploaded to YouTube, it has been viewed more than 21 million times. If you love classical guitar or just love a beautiful melody, be sure to tune in and prepare to be impressed.
