When construction worker Chris Tungseth auditioned for the 2026 series of American Idol, he wasn’t simply trying to break into the limelight, but wanted to spread his loving memory of his late father across the world.
As his family waited backstage, Chris wowed the judges with an original song dedicated to his dad’s legacy – an acoustic ballad that didn’t just melt the judges’ hearts but moved the nation to tears. Music Man readers can watch Chris’s audition unfold in the viral video below. It’s already racked up more than 260,000 views within a mere week of reaching YouTube!
Chris was born into a musical family; his opera-singing dad and pianist mum raised the family of four children watching American Idol, marking a cutely full-circle moment for the Minnesotan singer-songwriter.
But when Chris was just 10 years of age, his mum was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, leaving his father to become her caregiver. Chris describes his father as being “the strongest person he’d ever met, my best friend, my foundation” while reminiscing on their family upheaval.
However, that wasn’t the only tragedy to strike the picture-perfect family. Ten years after his mother’s diagnosis, Chris’s father was diagnosed with leukemia, which proved to be fatal. But Chris picked up the pieces, composing an original ballad, titled “Lonely Road,” in his father’s honour – the song he would take to the American Idol audition stage.
Chris, 27, sets a heart-wrenching yet cathartic country atmosphere with his acoustic guitar, before laying his tell-all lyrics over his chords; his voice bold, gripping, and professional as he relives his memories of love and loss. He sings to his dad as his siblings listen on, even faltering on some lines due to the sheer emotion they hold. Above it all, his song proves that some people never truly die, so long as their memory persists.
The judges had nothing but praise for Chris. Lionel Richie was even moved to share a story of his own father’s medical condition, revealing his utter grief as he found out his comatose dad was dying, before a hospital worker brought him comfort when they said, “I wish I had a dad to love as much as you have.” Chris agreed with Lionel’s sentiment, replying, “It’s a gift to hurt so much because it means that something is important to you.”
Luke Bryan, famed country singer, also related deeply to Chris’s story, focusing his comments on the art of maturing in the wake of personal disasters, before comparing Chris’s spotless audition to country legend Chris Stapleton.
Needless to say, Chris Tungseth was sent straight through to the next stage, Hollywood Week, landing three out of three Yes votes from the inspired judges.
