23-year-old Zeek Power put his whole heart into his audition on The Voice Australia, wowing judges with his version of Naughty Boy’s “Runnin’ (Lose It All)”. Power took the electronic number and made it entirely his own with a stripped-back acoustic arrangement, then truly let his voice soar on it.
The judges were vibing right from the start, particularly Kelly Rowland, who looked like she was in a trance. Rowland was no doubt quite familiar with the song, as it was originally sung by her former Destiny’s Child bandmate, Beyoncé. Power definitely didn’t drop the ball when he tried his hand at Bey’s soulful delivery, and the first judge to turn her chair for him was Delta Goodrem.
Rowland was quick to follow in Goodrem’s footsteps, and by the time Power sang the full chorus, Guy Sebastian and Boy George had also turned for the talented Brisbane singer. It was clear that Power had the full package, with a skillful hand on the acoustic guitar, a beautiful voice, and an intense presence that had the crowd riled up. The crowd, along with Power’s proud family, celebrated wildly after he turned all the judges’ chairs.
Fans online loved Power and tuned in 30 million times across multiple uploads. Listeners added comments such as “Best audition I’ve seen in a long time. We all felt that energy that Kelly mentioned, and with such a beautiful support system holding him up, he can’t go wrong” and “I listen to a lot of these global performances on The Voice and this is one of the best blind auditions I have seen. Beautiful tone in his voice.” Power’s version of “Lovely” was also a hit on the platform.
Rowland was the first to comment on Power’s audition, saying that he was a natural performer. “You are not shy at all,” she said. “It oozes from you.” She later made her pitch to get Power on her team, saying “I love how pure, authentic, raw and unapologetic you are. But when I tell you, I want some of what you have too. I promise you, whatever I’m giving you, I’m so excited to get it back.”
Rowland’s passionate speech won the young Aussie talent over, and Power picked team Rowland. This led judge Sebastian to lament about failing to recruit him, saying “I’m actually gutted”.
