There have been so many different types of auditions on America’s Got Talent over the years that it is pretty difficult to imagine seeing an audition for the show that is genuinely unique and different. This is exactly what improvisation group Improv Everywhere, however, provided when they auditioned for the show.
The audition started off like any other, with a mild-mannered pianist called Wesley Plumber taking to the stage alone to play ABBA’s ‘Take a Chance on Me’ on piano. Things started to go downhill pretty quickly for him, however, when the audience started to boo and hiss as he played, and it was only when a female audience member stood up to demand he be given a second chance that things really started to kick off.
At this point, it became pretty obvious that this wasn’t any ordinary audition, as the female audience member herself burst into song. Soon, multiple other audience members had joined her in a flash mob-style performance, and by the end, there was a whole group of singers on the AGT stage, as well as an entire brass band!
Given the slickness of their performance, Music Man readers will likely not be surprised to know this was not the first time that Improv Everywhere had pulled a prank like this on a large group of people. Check out the video below, for instance, which shows them staging a fake press conference in New York and drawing in real tourists and passersby.
It is their unexpected AGT audition, however, that Improv Everywhere remains known for, even more so perhaps because they did not make it through to the next round of the competition. That’s right, neither Sofia Vergara nor Howie Mandel gave the group a ‘yes’, meaning that their AGT dream sadly ended almost as quickly as it had begun.
Improv Everywhere’s AGT audition was a brilliantly mischievous twist on a typical tryout — a lone pianist that exploded into a full flash‑mob and brass band. It’s proof that surprise and theatre still captivate. If you want to see the full performance and learn more about the group, check the useful links below to discover more.
