We can say with confidence that almost every Music Man reader will have heard of Pink Floyd, and indeed that many of these readers will also have listened to what is arguably the group’s most iconic record, The Dark Side of the Moon. What we can also be sure of, however, is that Music Man readers have never heard the legendary songs from that record performed in the way that the Trinity Orchestra in Dublin performed them, as perhaps proved by the millions of views that the video of the rendition has already racked up.
The video shows two of the orchestra’s most jaw-dropping moments from their rendition: ‘Time’ and ‘Breathe (Reprise)’, both of which are transformed from intense progressive rock moments into stunning, uplifting renditions that sound as though they were written to be played by a full orchestra. Lead vocals, meanwhile, come courtesy of a young Hozier, the singer who has since become famous worldwide with hits like ‘Take Me to Church’.
Since its upload, Pink Floyd fans from all corners of the world have flocked to YouTube to leave their praise for the orchestra, the talented musicians who play in it, and of course, young Hozier’s lead vocals. “I am an old timer who doesn’t like my Floyd covered, because it is usually done poorly,” begins one comment. “But this is absolute brilliance. I am in awe.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the video of their Pink Floyd rendition remains the most popular on Trinity Orchestra’s YouTube channel by quite a long way. This is not to say there are not several other videos on their channel worth watching, not least the one below, for instance, which shows the group tackling a slew of classic tracks by iconic 2000s band Gorillaz.
Undoubtedly, the Trinity Orchestra’s finest moment to be captured on video and uploaded to YouTube, however, has to be their take on the Pink Floyd songs “Time” and “Breathe.” From vocals courtesy of young Hozier to the stunning orchestral arrangements, this is one video that even the most casual Pink Floyd fans will fall in love with from the moment they press play!
