Stephen Wilson Jr.’s breathtaking acoustic tribute to late dad, “Father’s Søn” melts hearts (ft. HARDY)

Working through grief is never easy or rewarding. But when Stephen Wilson Jr. dedicated a brand new track to his late father and performed it live and acoustic with his pal HARDY, the Indiana-born country songwriter went viral, his touching tribute amassing an eye-watering 4 million YouTube views in just 10 months.

Country rock has always been a vessel for pure and staggering emotions, but Stephen Wilson Jr.’s song “Father’s Søn” takes matters to a whole new level. You can hear the pained nostalgia ripple through Stephen’s voice as he sings his all-American lyrics: “He was named by my grandma, she got it from the Bible / And he passed it onto me, like granddaddy’s rifle,” the song pinned down by fragile truths and heartfelt connections that transcend a pulse.

Stephen’s vocals come addictively tinged with a smoky Southern melancholy, and when he reaches the chorus, the power is almost overwhelming.

Mississippi singer-songwriter HARDY takes the spotlight on the second verse. His voice is a flawless balance to Stephen’s, but just wait until the pair harmonize towards the end of the tune. The impact is unreal. These musicians share a rare and stunning chemistry as guitarists, too: their steely tones fresh and warm as summer; their performance truly captivating and authentic.

Wilson wrote this tune back in 2018, following the death of his father, Stephen Wilson Sr. And like countless musicians and artists before, Stephen has found creation to be the perfect antidote to his grief.

In an interview with People earlier this year, Stephen Jr. laid his heart on the table, stating about his father and his song “Father’s Søn”: “I died with him. My identity and who I was and everything that I was died with him. And then with his death is a rebirth of myself trying to figure out how to live without him. If there’s a blessing to it at all, that’s the only thing I can see. You’re trying to find any silver lining in the worst situation in the world. At this point, I’m just a stenographer of the pain.

“My dad is more alive than he’s ever been. He was just this country boy in southern Indiana, and very known in my town, but nobody knew him outside of it, and now he’s known all over the world. I sing about him all over the world. So, in a weird way, his legacy is more alive than it’s ever been. For me, the music has just always been some desperate attempt to keep him alive.”

Stephen Wilson Jr.’s “Father’s Søn” features on the breaking star’s debut album, “søn of dad,” first released in 2023 and recently included on the album’s deluxe 2025 edition.

Stephen Wilson Jr.’s heartfelt tribute not only resonates deeply within the country rock genre but also showcases the raw power of music to convey profound emotion. His viral performance alongside HARDY is a testament to how deeply “Father’s Søn” connects with listeners.
