School janitor Richard Goodall has won season 19 of America’s Got Talent – and he did it with some serious style and rock god energy. Being watched by an audience of millions, he must have been nervous, but he certainly didn’t show it as he took to the stage with members of legendary rock band Journey and powered through the vocals of their best-known hit ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’. The video of the performance was only uploaded this week, but it has already racked up over a million views online!
As soon as Richard starts to sing, he absolutely owns the stage, calling for cheers from the audience and delivering note-perfect vocals without missing a beat. Dressed in a subtle black outfit complete with a black flat cap, Richard doesn’t look like your typical rockstar, but he gains more and more confidence as the song goes on, and by the end he may as well be Journey’s new lead singer.
Richard himself, meanwhile, likely found the experience quite humbling, given that he is a self-professed fan of Journey and had previously given a rendition of the track for his America’s Got Talent audition (which prompted judge Heidi Klum to give him the Golden Buzzer). Fans all over the world have since commented on how the experience must have been a dream come true for him, with one saying “what class the members of Journey showed allowing Richard Goodall to live the dream.”
Over the course of the competition, Richard has proved time and time again that his vocal talents hit the mark, not least with his semi-finals performance of ‘Eye of the Tiger,’ which saw him receive a standing ovation from judge Heidi Klum as well as the majority of the audience. Watching his energetic and dynamic rendition, in hindsight it’s easy to see why he went on to take the America’s Got Talent crown (along with a brand new car and $1,000,000 in prize money) just a few weeks later.
At 56 years old, Richard is currently the oldest winner in the history of America’s Got Talent. As the saying goes, however, age is just a number, something this singing school janitor has proved without a doubt over the course of Season 19 of the competition.
