When teenage vocalist and guitarist Micah Denton entered his high school talent show alone, he took on a one-man-band cover of Green Day’s “American Idiot.”
But what happened next made for a memorable performance. Music Man readers can watch Micah become the stuff of high school legend in the video below…
Micah stands alone in the spotlight: a single student dressed all in black, armed with an electric guitar, an amp and a mic stand. The empty stage swallows him as he prepares to tackle one of the world’s most famous punk anthems.
But then, the unthinkable happens. Micah hits play on his drums and bass backing track, unleashing spot-on Green Day guitar tones as he strums the iconic intro to “American Idiot.”
It’s a flawless cover from the start, but the shock factor only snowballs once Micah drops his guitar to belt the verses like a pro, without a single hint of nervousness shining through the cracks.
Micah holds his position just like Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, serving a perfect cover from his aesthetics to his sound. Front-row audience members bop their heads to the beat while Micah gives the lyrics a modern twist, leaving out slurs and expletives and echoing Green Day’s live MAGA reference.
Between Micah’s guitar tone, impressive confidence and Chuck Berry dance moves, there’s plenty for Green Day fans to enjoy.
This isn’t the only punk rock cover Micah has performed, by the way. He has also shared a bass cover of Green Day’s “Stuck with Me” and promoted his band, 321 Bang.
