The voice from The Greatest Showman hit “Never Enough”, Loren Allred, dropped in for a very memorable carpool karaoke session with vocal coach Cheryl Porter. The girls got up to lots of crazy vocal hijinks, but the highlight was definitely Allred singing an absolutely flawless version of her double Platinum single “Never Enough” at the three-minute mark.
After Allred hit the dramatic climax of the song, Porter was left wiping away tears. You can’t blame her as Allred’s voice is superb, showing off an incredible range and the ability to sing with a velvet tone, whether singing a low-key verse or belting passionately. She also has a real knack for injecting powerful emotional impact into the performance.
The video starts with Allred doing a quirky vocal warmup, which showed off her impressive vocal control. Porter then tests her ability to hit high notes, with Allred displaying a clean and clear high range in an operatic style. After some more vocal gymnastics, it was then time for the main event, “Never Enough”, which Allred sang like a bird, nailing the whole thing in one take.
Porter explained the origin of the collaboration, stating, “When Loren reached out to me to coach her for her upcoming projects and performances, I was honoured and floared! It was hard to control the tears hearing one of my favourite singers singing one of my favourite songs in this unforgettable carpool karaoke coaching.” Allred also made a smashing appearance on Britain’s Got Talent in 2022, where she sang “Never Enough” and won the golden buzzer.
Allred has enjoyed quite a varied career in the music industry. The American songbird got her first break back in 2012 as a contestant on the third season of The Voice, where she picked Adam Levine as her coach. She performed four songs on the show before being eliminated in the opening week of the live playoffs and exited the show tied for third place.
Allred had bigger things in her future, however, as she gained work as a studio singer and was subsequently cast to record the vocals for Rebecca Ferguson’s character, Jenny Lind, on The Greatest Showman. Allred debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 with The Greatest Showman single “Never Enough,” which peaked at 88 on the chart.
“Never Enough” eventually went double Platinum in the US, and the full soundtrack did even better, going four times Platinum in the US and eight times Platinum in the UK. This latter figure made The Greatest Showman soundtrack the biggest selling album of 2018 in the UK.
When Allred appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, Simon Cowell told her that “Never Enough” was one of the biggest songs of all time and asked why she didn’t get a big record deal afterwards. Allred told Cowell that she “was more comfortable singing behind the scenes. But I feel kind of like the song was meant for me, and I’m kind of ready to put a face to the song. So I’m here to do that.”
Allred eventually placed ninth on Britain’s Got Talent and has since gone on to high-profile live and studio work such as touring with Andrea Bocelli and singing the official theme for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
