On BBC’s The Greatest Dancer, we saw many hopeful performances from people who wanted to become the next big dance act. Between the two winners of the show over the course of its life, there was a wild variety of interesting and truly talented acts who stole the hearts of the nation while also showcasing their passion for dance. One such act was Lily and Joseph: one of the youngest acts in the competition, and by far one of the sweetest.
As if their choreography and overall routine were not emotional enough, the song they chose to perform was equally uplifting and tear-jerking. Dancing to the incredible “Rise Up” by Andra Day, this young and talented duo shook the stage and reduced both the audience and judges to tears. Not only were Lily and Joseph fortunate enough to perform on The Greatest Dancer, but they also progressed through the audition phase of the competition and reached the final stage before losing to another dance duo, Michael and Jowita. This did not deter them from having the experience of performing live on stage with none other than the Girls Aloud pop star Cheryl Cole, and stealing the hearts of thousands in the process. A wave of support came from their fans all over the nation after their elimination.
Lily and Joseph were among some of the sweetest performances the nation had the opportunity to watch while The Greatest Dancer was airing. Another performance that sent Cheryl Crow into a barrage of tears was the audition a contestant named Andrew gave. This natural-born showman has Down’s Syndrome and entirely dominated his audition performance in the first season of The Greatest Dancer. The Greatest Dancer was a British dance competition television show that was created in 2019 by Simon Cowell and produced by Syco Entertainment. In it, hopeful undiscovered dance acts would perform live in front of both a studio audience and four judges: Cheryl Cole, Matthew Morrison, Todrick Hall, and Oti Mabuse. Not only would they get national attention while on the show, but they would also receive £50,000 and a chance to perform on Strictly Come Dancing if they won the competition.
Despite its success and admiration from the British public, and a swathe of viral hits on YouTube from the show, The Greatest Dancer only lasted for two seasons. After its second season finished airing in March 2020, the BBC announced that there were no plans to continue the show. While this is indeed a shame, we hope that all contestants who took part continue to chase their dreams and hone their craft in dancing.
