Any musicians amongst our Music Man fanbase will remember just how nerve-wracking it was to get up and perform in front of others for the very first time. The video of young Joshua Tan performing his very first solo concert on the violin in 2014 is sure to bring you back to that very moment. At St. Nicholas Church, Kenilworth, Joshua stood in front of his audience to nervously introduce his violin piece. At only three years old, the youngster was about to take a big step in his musical career.
Despite having looked forward to performing, Joshua felt nervous. He would be opening the concert as the youngest performer of the evening, and in a moment of shaky nerves, the young musician ran off stage and over to his family for reassurance. Then, he bravely made his way back in front of the audience and placed his violin under his chin. With focus and commitment, Joshua stuck his courage to the sticking place and played a variation on ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

Joshua impressed his audience with the performance, receiving a big round of applause when he finished. We love to see an adorable child prodigy here at The Music Man, and clearly, the rest of the internet does, too, as the video of his performance has now received over 10 million views. Not only did viewers comment on the cute factor of Joshua’s performance, but they were also impressed with the skill he showed at such a young age, one viewer noting, “His playing is so good. He even does pitch correction!”
Luckily, the nerves of his first performance didn’t put Joshua off his violin playing. Now, at age 13, Joshua has stuck to his lessons, and it has certainly paid off. His parents have continued to post videos to showcase his talent online. One of the most popular videos of Joshua’s recent playing was his performance of Csárdás by Vittorio Monti. Mature and sophisticated, the update on Joshua’s playing shows just how far his talent and hard work have taken him over the last ten years.
Seeing Joshua’s musical development over his young life is not only an impressive watch that will blow Music Man readers away, but it is also a reminder to us all to persevere with our passions. Despite his nerves, young Joshua bravely faced the challenge of performing a nursery rhyme at his first solo concert. That experience was a stepping stone to the impressive talent he displays today. We can all take a lesson from Joshua’s courage—to pursue our dreams and embrace our passions, and even if we stumble or need a moment to regroup, we can always find the strength to try again.
