Thought that Jim Carrey’s only talent was acting? Well, this video will make you think again! Appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman in 2010, the A-List actor gave a karaoke performance that was simultaneously impressive and hilarious – and which has since entertained millions of viewers on YouTube. And with Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, he didn’t pick any old karaoke song – he had to pick one that is not only hugely popular the world over, but which is also notoriously hard to sing!
That’s right, Carrey took on that classic of 1980s synth-pop, “Take On Me” by Norwegian band A-ha, and he delivered it in his typically unique style, first asking the show’s live band to play a song that would “challenge” him, and then launching directly into the track with no hesitation. Of course, everyone was waiting for Carrey to get to the chorus to see how he would fare with that near-impossible high note, but the actor did an admirable job, throwing his head back and giving it his all.
And it wouldn’t have been a Jim Carrey performance without some humorous moments thrown in there as well, one of which the actor provided when he smashed host David Letterman’s mug as he held that final high note, making it seem as though his voice had been so high that he had smashed the mug purely by singing! Whilst Letterman himself didn’t look too impressed at his mug being broken, many of the video’s viewers loved Carrey’s joke, as well as his surprisingly powerful singing voice.
For hardcore Carrey fans, meanwhile, the actor’s musical appearance on the Letterman Show might have reminded them of this video, which shows Carrey trying his hand at singing Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ live onstage at NYC club Arlene’s Grocery. Again, his vocals aren’t perfect, but you can tell he’s giving the song his all, with one viewer commenting “you can see in his eyes, he feels every word,” and another saying “the way he sang this in his own personal method was rare, brutal, and a masterpiece.”
If there were Music Man readers out there who didn’t know Jim Carrey was musically inclined before reading this article, then they certainly do now! Whilst his main talent of course lies in acting, these two videos prove that Carrey has a solid voice that he can apply to a range of genres. More importantly, the videos show that he really does put his heart and soul into every project he’s involved in.
