The virtual livestream “Whole Lotta Celebratin’ Goin’ On: 85 Years of The Killer” aired on October 27, 2020, celebrating Jerry Lee Lewis’s 85th birthday while raising funds for World Vision. Hosted by John Stamos, it was produced and directed by Zach Farnum/117 Entertainment in association with Jeff Franklin and Tisha Fein. The evening was dedicated to Lewis’s late friend and confidant Steve Bing. It also reunited Lewis with his famous cousins, country star Mickey Gilley and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, in the same room for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Among the many performers, Portsmouth, Ohio, pianist and singer Jacob Tolliver delivered a blistering rendition of “Rockin’ My Life Away.” Tolliver had previously portrayed Lewis in the Las Vegas production of Million Dollar Quartet and later appeared as an opening act for the rock-and-roll legend. He was joined by members of Lewis’s road band: longtime guitarist Kenny Lovelace, bassist Ray Gann and acclaimed session drummer Kenny Aronoff. Together, they recreated the pounding piano, driving rhythm and uninhibited excitement associated with Lewis’s unmistakable performing style.
The tribute becomes even more impressive when considered alongside the extraordinary collection of talent involved in the birthday celebration. Elton John, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr and Kris Kristofferson were among those offering greetings, while Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, Chris Janson, Linda Gail Lewis and others contributed performances. Former President Bill Clinton also appeared. Tolliver therefore found himself included in an event featuring some of the most recognisable figures in music, entertainment, sport and politics—and his exhilarating performance became one of its memorable musical highlights.
Ultimately, this performance demonstrates that the exuberant spirit of early rock and roll continues to inspire younger musicians. Tolliver does more than simply imitate Lewis: he honours the distinctive piano technique, showmanship and rhythmic power that made “The Killer” such an influential performer. Fans clearly appreciate his commitment to keeping that sound alive. As one devoted viewer summarised, “Jerry Lee will never be forgotten as long as Jacob Tolliver lives!!!” Through energetic musical tributes like this, Lewis’s extraordinary influence continues to reach new generations.
