18-year-old Grace Humphries breaks hearts on The Voice 2026 with emotional audition singing Joni Mitchell classic for her late brother, but coaches’ reaction causes controversy

18-year-old Grace Humphries broke everyone’s hearts on The Voice 2026 singing for her late big brother and “best friend” on Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” She lost her brother Liam after a battle with brain cancer, and her performance of the folk ballad hit fans right in the chest. Grace’s March 10 audition hit the spot for coach John Legend, as the R&B star turned his chair for her within the first three lines.

Hearing Grace take on a Joni Mitchell classic from 1966 was definitely a bit of a risk. However, it clearly paid off for her, and The Music Man was glad to see someone bring something a bit different to the table for The Voice auditions. Viewers called Grace’s audition “magical” and “refreshing.” However, a number of fans felt that coaches Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine dropped the ball big time by not turning their chairs.

Grace’s audition drew 284,000 views when it went live on YouTube. A number of fans were moved by her story and added comments such as “I feel for her loss and to be honest, it brought me to tears” and “Only one chair turned? WTF. She’s magical.” Other viewers noted that with so many other auditions on R&B and soul songs, Grace did a great job by distinguishing herself with an authentic old-school folk vibe.

Grace has since returned for her second appearance on The Voice. She performed on March 17 in a battle with Adi Arora on Pink and Nate Ruess’s “Just Give Me a Reason.” Both singers gave strong performances, and the battle split much of the fanbase on which singer deserved to win. The decision came down to John, though, and the coach chose Grace to advance, sending Adi home.

Grace Humphries is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas. She describes herself as a country, pop, and folk singer and an “old soul.” She said in her first appearance on The Voice that her mum felt she could become “the next Joni Mitchell.” The Music Man readers might be interested to hear that Grace is already well on her way to establishing herself as a singer-songwriter. She has issued a number of original singles over the past 12 months, which are available for streaming on her YouTube channel, Grace Humphries. Grace is still in the running for The Voice 2026. After she won her battle with Adi, fans are now awaiting her third performance on the show.
