Prison Nurse Dee Dee Simon Commands The America’s Got Talent Stage With Classic ‘Dreamgirls’ Song

Anyone out there who’s familiar with the Broadway musical ‘Dreamgirls’ will know that the signature song from the production is ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, a soulful, defiant track sung by the lead character Effie. It is by no means an easy song to sing – demanding some serious power, projection, and attitude from its singer – but California vocalist Dee Dee Simon made it look effortless when she performed the track for her America’s Got Talent audition earlier this month.

Giving every line of the song the soul and the power it deserved, Dee Dee was an instant hit with the audience, with screams erupting from various corners of the room even as she sang. By the time the song reached its climax, everyone was on their feet, with some audience members shaking their heads in disbelief at the power emanating from Dee Dee’s vocals. At one point, the singer even kicked off her shoes, showing just how comfortable she was even when giving such an important performance.

In fact, Dee Dee’s audition was so incredibly powerful and confident that people watching could be forgiven for thinking she is a professional singer. But although she claims to have been singing all her life, it’s never been her profession; she actually works as a nurse in California’s toughest prison, San Quentin, telling the judges that she once incited a riot amongst the inmates with her singing. “After I sang a song, a riot broke out,” she smiled sheepishly. “Then I had to triage everybody.”

For further proof that Dee Dee absolutely owned her audition, check out this video of Jennifer Hudson’s version of the song from the 2006 Dreamgirls movie, which one viewer calls “the best vocal performance in the history of cinema.” Jennifer absolutely commands this scene in the film, and whilst it would be virtually impossible for anyone else to recreate such an iconic vocal performance, Dee Dee certainly gave it her best shot by channeling Jennifer’s powerhouse vibes at her audition.

“I thought it was spectacular,” said judge Sofia Vergara when Dee Dee had finished, “it was a beautiful treat to have you here tonight.” More overwhelmingly positive comments from the other judges followed, before Simon Cowell summed up by saying, “you picked one of the hardest songs in the world and you absolutely nailed it.”

It goes without saying that the hugely talented Dee Dee proceeded to receive a ‘yes’ from all four judges, sending her straight through to the next round. And with the video of her audition racking up over a million views in just one week, it looks as though she’s swiftly becoming an America’s Got Talent fan favorite.
