Dave Grohl made one 15-year-old fan feel like a genuine rockstar when he invited her onstage to play “Monkey Wrench” at a Foo Fighters show. You never know what’s gonna happen when a fan gets a chance to play onstage, but luckily Lauren Hunter absolutely had the goods. The teen totally crushed it onstage with the band, playing the hard-rocking number without breaking a sweat!
Lauren’s big moment happened at the Foos’ show at the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas, on August 5, 2021. The performance was also notable because Grohl handed Lauren his own guitar, and instead of pulling double duty like he normally does, the frontman just rocked the mic like Freddie Mercury. Grohl is a big fan of bringing audience members onstage like this, and he looked like he was having just as much of a ball as Lauren was, making for a super fun performance.
Lauren later said on her TikTok account, Lauren.Hunter15, that she had never played guitar onstage before in her whole life. For the teen to show such composure and play so solidly under that kind of pressure was super impressive. She also showed the ability to think on her feet, as the band did a unique breakdown in the live arrangement, but she still managed to lock it down. Lauren’s stint as a member of the Foo Fighters was quite the hit on YouTube, attracting 3.3 million views.
Grohl has made a habit of bringing fans onstage for spontaneous performances, and he often chooses “Monkey Wrench” as the song to jam with fans on. The most popular surprise fan performance at a Foos show was also done on “Monkey Wrench,” when fan Yayo Sanchez hit the stage. Grohl dubbed Sanchez ‘Kiss Guy’ because he performed in Kiss bassist Gene Simmons’ makeup. Sanchez’s energetic performance went ridiculously viral, attracting 24 million views across multiple uploads on YouTube.
Fans had plenty of praise for Grohl’s big heart in inviting fans up to share the limelight with him. They were also very impressed with Lauren’s playing, and added comments such as “She nailed it so hard. I’ll say it again, Dave is the nicest guy in rock ‘n’ roll 10 times over! I love seeing him share the stage with fans” and “I can’t imagine the energy she had flowing through her at this moment. Unreal. So happy for her!”
