Christina Perri’s voice is everything! The Pennsylvania singer-songwriter put her husky voice to good use performing the iconic opening to her hit “Jar of Hearts” in a 10th-anniversary performance of the single. Perri showed off her talents by performing the song solo on piano in the new version of her debut single, and when it comes time for that big chorus, you might just find yourself singing along.
Things keep getting better throughout the performance, as Perri really ramps up the emotive power of her vocals from the second verse onwards. Fans clearly loved hearing her perform the classic hit, as they tuned in 11 million times on YouTube. The Music Man readers might want to listen to her original recording of the song back to back with the new version, as it really shows off her development as a vocalist.
Perri uploaded her solo version of “Jar of Hearts” on July 1, 2020, noting that she recorded it herself at home. Fans loved the throwback and added comments such as “I seriously cannot believe it’s been 10 years. I was 13-14 when this came out and it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long at all. But I still love this song so much” and “The maturity this version holds is stunning. It’s like the original was the pain of heartbreak and now it’s the acceptance and the happiness that follows a broken heart.”

Perri’s most popular live performance on YouTube is her rendition of “A Thousand Years” for The Live Room. She dropped into The Fortress in Los Angeles, California, for the live studio session on her hit song from the soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Perri performed the song in a stripped-back acoustic version, and the harmonies that her guitarist provides really take the vocal arrangement to the next level.
Perri released “Jar of Hearts” as her debut single on September 27, 2010. She co-wrote the song with Drew Lawrence and Barrett Yeretsian, drawing inspiration from a real-life heartbreak for the lyrics. The Music Man readers might be interested to hear that she released the single as an unsigned artist, but the song took off, selling 47,500 downloads in the first week.
Perri subsequently signed to Atlantic Records, and “Jar of Hearts” was featured on her debut EP The Ocean Way Sessions, as well as on her debut album Lovestrong. The single became an international hit, going six times Platinum in the US, as well as three times Platinum in the UK and Australia.
