Chance The Rapper Sang A Hip Hop-Country Crossover For Laughs On Jimmy Fallon, But When Fans Heard It, They Called Him A Musical Genius

When Jimmy Fallon asked Chance the Rapper to sing a country version of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” pretty sure no one was ready for the musical genius he had in store for them. Chance had the whole room laughing from the very first word, as the Chicago rapper delivered a southern drawl over the hip-hop classic. The surprise country rap crossover for some reason just totally worked.

Chance showed himself to be a lot more than just a rapper, as the comedy bit proved to show that he can really carry a tune in whatever style you throw at him. As well as being hilarious, the country rap jam was just brilliant musically. Chance performed the crossover cover on Fallon’s That’s My Jam segment, and it won’t surprise The Music Man readers to know that the song was a hit online. The cover drew 7.6 million views on The Tonight Show YouTube channel.

Fans were thoroughly entertained by Chance’s “Hot in Herre” cover, but they also really appreciated the fresh take on the hip-hop classic. Viewers added comments below the video such as “When it’s supposed to be comical but it turns into musical genius” and “I can’t be the only person that wants a full version. My man is a legend for this.” Aside from Chance’s mad skills on the mic, The Tonight Show band also provided a rollicking groove that was the perfect counterpoint for him to flow over.

Jimmy Fallon has a real knack for finding some undiscovered talents in his big-name guests. Another popular segment on The Tonight Show featured Millie Bobby Brown rapping a recap of the first season of Stranger Things. Just like the Chance segment, Brown’s rap really showed that she can crush it even when called upon to do something totally unexpected musically.

It’s no surprise that Chance quickly had the whole crowd singing along to “Hot in Herre.” As The Music Man readers may recall, back in the early 2000s, that song was heard absolutely everywhere.

Nelly dropped “Hot in Herre” on May 7, 2002, as the lead single from his second studio album Nellyville. Nelly wrote the hit with Charles Brown, Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo, with the latter two also providing production for the song.
“Hot in Herre” peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double Platinum in the US. It has since become one of Nelly’s signature songs and remains his third most streamed track on Spotify.
