You know when the Bee Gees are willing to be your backup vocalists, then you’re a real pop legend! None other than Celine Dion had that honour when she sang “Immortality” live on Top of the Pops in an old school performance in 1998, with the three Bee Gees brothers turning up to play piano and provide backing vocals. Now it won’t surprise any The Music Man readers to hear that the performance sounds absolutely heavenly – talk about a vocal line!
Maurice Gibb provided piano for the song, and alongside his brothers Barry and Robin, created an epic backing vocal trio for Dion. The Bee Gees are just so insanely talented that every live performance they do is special in some way, but this one really takes the cake with Dion just bringing it to the next level! You can tell everyone there, including the performers, knew that something unforgettable was happening in front of them.
Fans were truly amazed by the vocal supergroup on display and added comments such as “The greatest female vocalist of all time with the magnificent Bee Gees – absolute musical perfection. This is still one of the best performances of all time” and “One of the best songs I ever heard and I’m not even a fan of Celine but with the Bee Gees, another dimension.”

Dion and the Bee Gees have teamed up multiple times over the years to perform live. Another great cut from the vocal dream team was when they performed “Immortality” at the Bee Gees One Night Only Las Vegas show in 1997. You can really tell that the song means a lot to Dion as she sings it, as you can just see the passion pouring out of her.
Dion released “Immortality” on June 6, 1998, as the fifth single from her fifth English-language studio album Let’s Talk About Love. The Bee Gees wrote the song for the Canadian diva and also provided backing vocals in the studio for the Walter Afanasieff-produced number. The Gibb brothers wrote “Immortality” in 1996 and initially penned it for use in the Saturday Night Fever musical. The demo version features Barry Gibb performing a gorgeous falsetto vocal.
