If I had to guess, I’d say the majority of Music Man readers are familiar with the song ‘Forever Young’ by Alphaville. With its sweeping synths and iconic lyrics about a desire for eternal youth, the track is arguably one of the most iconic songs of the 80s, meaning that anyone who attempts to cover it – either live or in the studio – is setting themselves up for a challenge.
Two young girls who recently took on this challenge and succeeded, however, are Shanilee and Leire, who gifted passers-by in London with a jaw-dropping live version of the tune. With the minimal guitar accompaniment and the girls’ angelic voices, viewers are saying that this rendition gives a whole new meaning to the song, turning it into something even more haunting and deeply emotional.
With over 1.3 million views on YouTube alone, the video has also racked up hundreds of comments from listeners worldwide. The most popular comment on the video seems to have resonated with a huge number of people, emphasizing just how special the performance was that day. It simply reads: “A lot of people complain about life, but when life gives you beautiful moments like these, the same people walk by.”
Given their amazing chemistry they have throughout their rendition of ‘Forever Young,’ few people will be surprised to hear this was not the first time Shanilee and Liere have played a duet together while busking. In the past, for instance, the girls have also taken on the classic Bon Jovi track ‘Livin’ on a Prayer,’ resulting in yet another hauntingly beautiful cover.
For me, however, it’s the girls’ rendition of ‘Forever Young’ that is a truly jaw-dropping performance. Bringing a renewed sense of youthfulness and hope to the song, it is little surprise that so many viewers have called this one of the best public performances they have ever seen online.
Shanilee and Leire’s haunting, stripped-back take on “Forever Young” proves they’re a duo to watch—turning a familiar classic into something utterly moving. If you want to hear more from these gifted performers, check the useful links below to discover videos, socials and upcoming performances.
