10y/o busker shocks crowd with intense Twinkle Twinkle Little Star performance

10-year-old Japanese pianist and child prodigy, Puni, has been posting music performances on YouTube for the last four years. In 2023, the pipsqueak star shocked passers-by in Tokyo when he sat at a public piano to play the legendary kids’ tune, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Except, Puni’s rendition of the classic lullaby is like no other you’ve heard before. He turns a simple tune into a classical masterpiece and makes it seem like second nature.

This stunning clip has amassed more than 3.1 million views to date, with thousands of fans praising Puni’s unimaginable piano skills. Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the video below!

Puni starts his “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” rendition like any other—basic melody, basic chords, basic timing, all played to perfection. A small crowd gathers, watching Puni play. But then, the novelty hits.

Puni isn’t playing your usual “Twinkle Twinkle…” rendition, but a cover of Cateen’s YouTube-famous “7 Levels of Difficulty” version. In this rearrangement, the lullaby is repeated eight times (Levels 0 to 7), with each repetition of the simple tune being made ever more intricate until the lullaby verges upon the musically impossible, and is almost entirely removed from its original sound.

That’s not all. Cateen (a.k.a. Hayato Sumino, the arrangement’s original composer) channels the mood of a famous composer and/or pianist into each repetition, weaving a tapestry of profound emotions through the basic lullaby, whilst recreating classical music aesthetics from across the centuries. Some levels sound a bit like Mozart, others more like Chopin and Liszt. But through it all, Puni nails each and every element of Cateen’s ultra-creative reimagination, showcasing musical talent many years beyond his age.

Viewers simply can’t get over the young boy’s talent. One viewer commented, “Even at levels 0 and 1, you can tell that he has exceptional talent just from the way the sound bounces and the lightness of the tone. It’s really amazing.” Another backed them up, writing, “To perform such a difficult piece publicly, even from memory, and to be only 10 years old… you must have worked hard. I almost cried when I thought about your efforts. Thank you for your wonderful performance.”

But why did Puni choose this piece? Puni reveals the wholesome story in his YouTube description, detailing how a fan gifted him the sheet music for this piece during an off-the-cuff encounter, and after six months of practice, he was finally ready to give it a spin. Puni even admits, “This piece is extremely difficult and I’m not satisfied with my performance, but I did my best and played it until the end.”

This is hardly Puni’s first public piano performance to go viral. The young star currently boasts over 143,000 YouTube subscribers, with seven of his music videos passing the million-view milestone. His most viewed vid: a public rendition of “Idol” by Japanese duo Yoasobi, currently topping 5.1 million views. Not bad for a 10-year-old!
