In 2021, the judges and audience of America’s Got Talent were in for a unique treat when they were greeted by a performance from the World Taekwondo Demonstration Team. With a team spanning from all over the world, from South Korea to America, this talented and very large group of performers was about to wow the judges so much that they would receive the coveted golden buzzer for their efforts.
Explaining before their performance, the group was invited to perform at the Olympic Games but could not attend due to the developing COVID-19 pandemic at the time. They were, however, able to attend America’s Got Talent, which led Simon Cowell to comedically add: “So you could say you chose us over the Olympics”! Armed with the confidence that they would win the competition, the group prepared a performance that the room would not soon forget. Watch the incredible clip below:
Just before their performance begins, Judge Howie Mandel comments that his daughter has a black belt in Taekwondo, so he surely knows how much of a commitment the sport takes to master and execute efficiently. That’s exactly what the World Taekwondo Demonstration Group showcased: true mastery of the sport, complete with a dramatic drum sequence in the background to make this tantalizing performance even more exciting.
As the outfits use each other’s bodies to perform flips and maneuvers, destroying planks of wood in the process, it’s clear just how much control a sport like this requires. They then go into a sequence of choreographed kicks and punches, all the while being completely in tandem with one another. There’s no doubt, then, that the outfit would receive a Golden Buzzer for a truly unforgettable performance, finishing the production with a banner saying “Peace is more precious than triumph”.
While they received the Golden Buzzer and were incredibly confident at the start of the competition, the World Taekwondo Demonstration Team was eliminated from America’s Got Talent in the bottom 5 of the top 10. This did not deter them, however, as they also received a Golden Buzzer on France’s Got Talent later in 2021, and were also finalists in that competition!
