The music video for Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is surely one of the most recognisable and iconic videos of all time, having inspired thousands of artists since and been replicated by others many times. One of the most notable instances of this in recent years comes courtesy of the young Ukrainian gymnast Taisiia Onofriichuk, who put her own daring twist on the ‘Thriller’ video with her hoop routine at the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
Dressed in a glittering outfit clearly inspired by Michael Jackson’s iconic red jacket and trousers in the video, Onofriichuk was the picture of elegance and grace as she leapt, spun, and twirled across the floor, all whilst controlling her hoop. Many of her moves took inspiration from the zombies in the music video, and with a huge smile on her face as she completed the routine, it was clear that the young gymnast was enjoying every second of the performance.
With the video of her routine racking up hundreds of thousands of views online in just a matter of months, viewers from all over the world have flocked to YouTube to leave their compliments for this incredibly talented gymnast and her musical inspiration. “The musicality, the technique, the personality…she has it all!” praised one particularly overawed fan, while many others praised her unique twist on the track.
Another of Onofriichuk’s routines that has proved popular online is her clubs routine at the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships earlier this year. This time, the gymnast chose ‘Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)’ by C&C Music Factory as her choice of music, and once again she delivered a spectacular performance that fit perfectly with the mood of the song while putting an elegant spin on it with her routine.
Shockingly, Taisiia Onofriichuk did not take home a medal for her routines at the Olympic Games in 2024, which saw her putting a gymnastics-themed twist on Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ But with her elegance, grace, and musicality, she has certainly won the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people online, and we have no doubt that the future holds big things for this talented young gymnast.
Taisiia Onofriichuk has certainly captivated the world with her extraordinary tribute to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, bringing her own artistic flair to the iconic routine. Her performance has not just mesmerized audiences but also sparked renewed interest in innovative artistic expressions.
