U2. Bruce Springsteen. Patti Smith. On one unforgettable night at Madison Square Garden, the ultimate in rock royalty came together to perform “Because the Night”. Patti singing straight from her soul, Bruce bringing that folky honesty from his heart and U2’s Bono bringing the spirit. Hearing the Edge’s mesmerising solo mix with Bruce’s jangly rhythm playing is so satisfying. You can tell with the energy that all of them perform that they know this is one of those legendary moments.
The killer lineup came together for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert. U2 settled into the role of a powerhouse rhythm section, with Bono playing a supporting vocal role as Smith and Springsteen seared the Garden with their lead vocal interplay. And can we just say The Boss stole the show with his blisteringly primal guitar solo at 4:05. The reaction from Bono in that moment said it all.
The origin of the collab goes all the way back to 1977. Producer Jimmy Iovine was engineering Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions while also producing the Patti Smith Group’s album Easter. Springsteen had mapped out the music and the hook to “Because the Night”, but had not settled on the verses. As Smith later recalled, Iovine passed her the tape, and she penned the verses while anxiously waiting for a phone call from her lover, and future husband, Fred “Sonic” Smith. Released in 1978, the track surged to number thirteen in the United States and reached number five on the British charts.
This Madison Square Garden collab drew on deep ties between the performers. Bono inducted Springsteen into the Rock Hall in 1999, and Springsteen returned the favour by inducting U2 in 2005. That same year, Smith supported U2 at the Garden, joining them on stage for John Lennon’s “Instant Karma.” Bono later told Billboard that the original success of “Because the Night” had kicked open mainstream radio doors for artistic outsiders. That shared history turned their 2009 performance into a genuine celebration of mutual respect rather than just another all-star jam. Watch Bruce Springsteen join U2 on stage for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” during the 2005 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The Madison Square Garden collaboration retained a gritty, live edge that contemporary concertgoers instantly noticed. Associated Press reported that the musicians actually botched their initial cues and restarted the song in front of the crowd. The willingness to reset mid-show highlighted the spontaneous reality of the evening.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame cut of “Because the Night” accumulated more than 4.5 million views on YouTube. Fans in the comments praised the collective energy on stage, with one listener declaring that “Patti Smith isn’t a singer, she’s a force of nature.” Another commenter said: “Man, what a joy, what an energy when they all sing together at 3:10. I got chills.”
