New York’s Trey Whitfield School scored its school choir a viral video that’s still making the rounds today. An adorable flash mob of singers erupting in the middle of a lesson? Packed with the hilarious cringe inherent to school-budget clips? While this vid has amassed nearly 9 million views over on YouTube, The Music Man is shocked that it hasn’t attained absolute meme status.
The clip kicks off with a skit from a Trey Whitman teacher and his class; the school’s Voices Of Trey choir filing into the room to begin a lesson on ‘dreams.’ Filmed from a student’s desk, the vid is an instant throwback to sitting in class, and it’s your choice whether to find it wholesome or low-key traumatic. Nevertheless, the kids act their student roles, but when the teacher leaves the classroom, one boy jumps on the conveniently placed keyboard (cue embarrassingly awful jump-cut).
After a sweet piano intro, two young girls begin vocalizing in a moment of Disney-like anticipation before a new mass of choir singers cutely file into the room; saccharine sweet but destined to make any viewer’s, especially once they start singing!
Contrary to most school choirs, Voices Of Trey are actually good, despite their performance being cut in half by another cackle-worthy skit featuring the teacher. Mixed in gender and ages, they take on Bruno Mars’ #1 hit “Just The Way You Are” like pros for their young age, with some of the kids shining exceptionally bright. One girl sings with sass, one boy looks too casually bored for his own good, while others sing with bright smiles and traditional choir reserve.
It’s always awesome to see aspiring kids have fun finding themselves, and this is one of those viral videos which shows off the perks of choir communities perfectly; some of the kids already sing like music is their life, and it’d be wild to find out how many of them pursued a career in the performing arts, this video now being over 11 years old. Viewers will instantly catch how much fun the choir are having at getting to film this clip in their own classroom and act out a scene with their teacher before causing musical mayhem when left to their own devices.
This isn’t the only YouTube video featuring Voices of Trey. They’ve also performed a Christmas tune, “It’s Here Again,” on the roof of their school in the middle of the falling snow. Check out the music video above!
