When TORWAI dragged a drum kit into a kitchen, it was clear that this was going to be no ordinary cover. When the vocalist started chopping vegetables and heating oil in a pan, things became even stranger. Then, things started to make a little bit more sense. The vocalist started singing, and it became clear that they were recording a cover of System of a Down’s ‘Chop Suey!’. In a creative move, they played on the song’s food-related title by cooking as they performed.
Music Man readers will be astonished when they hear how well they played the cover, despite being cramped in a tiny kitchen and cooking at the same time. The song isn’t easy to play at the best of times, but it’s amazing how the singer nails the metal vocals as he cooks. Unsurprisingly, there was a slight mishap when the singer’s pan caught fire. Somehow, though, it seemed to give the cover even more of a heavy metal vibe.
It’s safe to say that I have never seen a cover quite like this. It’s unconventional and powerful in its irreverence; perfect for a cover of a song by a band like System of a Down. I especially loved the reaction of the drummer when the pan caught fire. Instead of panicking, he just grins and continues to play. Both musicians seem to be having so much fun that it’s utterly contagious. It’s hilarious to see the vocalist recover from the fire and simply continue with his cooking — and the cover.
Music Man fans might think that this cover was a one-off — that TORWAI dragged their drum kit into the kitchen for ‘Chop Suey!’ because the location suited the song’s title. Strangely, this is not the case. They have made performing in the kitchen their speciality. They even managed to find another food-related System of a Down song to suit their style. Their cover of ‘Sugar’ is just as impressive as their ‘Chop Suey!’ one, although I can’t help feeling they should have baked a dessert this time.
There is no doubt that TORWAI have come up with an eye-catching way to grab scrollers’ attention. What is truly impressive, though, is that their skill and talent shine throughout their covers. Both their musical performance and their visuals are infused with joy and excitement. With a truly unique niche, fans will be staying tuned to see which food-related songs they might cover next.
