Tom Jones and Peter Donegan Revive a Classic on The Voice UK

Reality TV auditions rarely carry genuine musical history, but the opening week of The Voice UK in January 20199 broke the mould. Contestant Peter Donegan had just finished Rascal Flatts’s “Bless the Broken Road,” securing a place on Team Tom after Sir Tom Jones became the only coach to hit his button. The routine audition chatter quickly vanished when Jones discovered Peter was the son of his old friend and former touring partner, skiffle pioneer Lonnie Donegan.

What happened next went far beyond standard talent-show fare. Instead of simply heading backstage, Peter sat down at the piano to accompany Jones on “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” Jones turned the ballad into a massive number two hit in the UK in 1967, but for Peter, the song was a piece of family history. Their impromptu collaboration captured a spontaneous spark that brought two generations together over a tune written more than half a century earlier. Just before he sang, he said a famous bob dylen quote, “the times they are a changin”.

The duet carried genuine musical weight because of the men who created the track. Lonnie Donegan co-wrote the song with Jimmy Currie and released his own single in 1962, five years before Jones made it famous. Jones later remembered Lonnie building the ballad from an older folk tune, reshaping the lyrics and adding the sweeping chorus. Hearing Lonnie’s son play those opening chords alongside Jones closed an artistic circle that stretched back to the golden era of British pop.

Peter did not arrive on stage as an untrained amateur relying on a famous surname. He started playing keyboards in his father’s touring band at eighteen, learning the realities of live performance through steady road work. He had also cut his own Nashville-recorded EP, “Superman,” in 2017. Peter later explained that the television duet had no prior run-through and that he stepped up to the piano himself when the studio house band was not ready to launch into the song. Lonnie’s musical legacy reached far beyond that single composition. His 1956 smash “Rock Island Line” kicked off the skiffle craze that inspired teenage members of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who. Even Elvis Presley took notice of Donegan and Currie’s songwriting, recording “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” at Graceland in 1976. Peter continued championing his father’s work later in 2019, staging an anniversary concert and recording a live album at the very Decca studio where skiffle first exploded.

The televised moment resonated far beyond Saturday-night broadcasting schedules. The official video of the performance has attracted more than 16.7 million views online. The sudden attention even renewed commercial life for the 1967 original, propelling Jones’s vintage recording into the top 25 of the UK singles sales and download charts more than fifty years after its first release.
