What do you get when you put three of the best singers in the industry in one room? Why, you get an unforgettable performance on Tom Jones’ TV show when the Welsh legend teamed up with Cher and Esther Ofarim! Tiger invited the two talented ladies to join him on his show This is Tom Jones in 1969, where they sang a medley of songs that showcased their incredible talents as well as being guaranteed to put a smile on your dial!
Jones and Cher began the segment with a duet on Ofarim’s song “Cinderella Rockafella”, and already the chemistry was absolutely off the charts. Ofarim then made her entrance and took the limelight for a moment with a duet with Jones on Cher’s hit “I Got You Babe”. Of course, now it was Cher and Ofarim’s turn to rizz Jones with his tune “Delilah”, then all three sang a grooving version of Cher’s “The Beat Goes On”, where they each got a lead vocal spot to shine on.
All three singers were clearly just enjoying the moment together and they really created a memorable performance that night. This wasn’t lost on viewers at home, who tuned in 5.2 million times to the medley on YouTube. Fans were really blown away by the trio, and added comments such as “Three legends of music on one stage. Anyone who got to see this live oughta consider themselves very lucky” and “The harmonies when Cher and Esther sing in sync are stunning. Mind blowing!”
Tiger hosted This Is Tom Jones for three seasons, starting in 1969. The Welsh icon brought on some real A-listers during this time, showcasing how much respect and goodwill he had in the music industry. Another popular clip from the show finds Tiger and Cher singing a duet on “The Beat Goes On.” Cher only appeared once on This Is Tom Jones, so even though she had a costume change, it seems that the duet is from the same May 2, 1969 episode that also featured Ofarim.
It seems that Jones and Cher really hit it off when she appeared on his TV show. Tiger returned the favor for Cher by later appearing on The Sonny & Cher Show in October 1976. The Welshman sang an upbeat duet with Cher on Ashton, Gardner and Dyke’s “Resurrection Shuffle” when he appeared on the show. This performance is also available on YouTube.
