The Spice Girls Give Iconic Reunion Performance At London 2012 Olympics On “Wannabe”

When you talk about iconic reunions in pop music, it doesn’t get much better than the Spice Girls getting back together for the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. The English girl group sang “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life” in a hectic performance that featured them swanning around the arena atop moving black London taxis. After the girls arrived in glammed-up taxis, they sang their biggest hit in a sassy performance that showed everything that’s great about the Spice Girls.

Mel B and Emma Bunton kicked off the classic opening verse with plenty of energy, and then the group sang the big chorus together. It had been a long time between drinks for the fabulous five-piece, as the group initially called it quits in 2000 to focus on their solo careers. They briefly reunited for a 2007-2008 concert tour, but the one-off 2012 reunion for the Olympics was definitely their most memorable moment of the 21st century.

The “Wannabe” performance at the Olympics attracted 26.6 million views on YouTube. This made it the Spice Girls’ most popular live cut on the platform by a huge margin. Fans gave the live show a big reception on YouTube, adding comments such as “I can’t help but get the chills watching this. No matter what anyone says, the Spice Girls are iconic and always will be” and “They represented their country so well. Every time I watch this performance, I can’t help but beam from ear to ear.”

The Spice Girls sure know how to bring the fire live, as seen on their hit reunion concert tours. However, there’s also something really special about their old school shows. A great example of this is their pair of shows at the Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul, Turkey on October 12 and 13, 1997. The energy coming off the five-piece is absolutely off the charts, with the stars doing some crazy acrobatics on stage, as seen on “Wannabe.”

The Spice Girls kicked off their career with their debut single “Wannabe” on June 26, 1996. The song was certainly well-chosen, as it went to number one across just about the entire Western world and went four times Platinum in the UK. The high-energy pop tune was not only their biggest chart hit but has continued to be the group’s most popular tune on streaming services to this day.
