Kansas family trio The McKinney Sisters gave such an angelic rendition of this traditional hymn that when you hear those harmonies, you might just think you’ve gone to heaven! The sisters sang in such perfect harmony at the church performance while delivering beautiful melodies on guitar, mandolin, and banjo. When listening to their take on “Nothing But the Blood,” it’s clear their voices were made for one another, and 9 million music lovers agreed!
Eldest sister Daryl cheekily called this arrangement style “grassing it up,” noting that they took a traditional hymn and performed it bluegrass style, and clearly they’re on to something here! The Music Man has to say that Daryl, Mikyl, and Randyl have impeccable chemistry as a trio, and are so charming on stage that it makes their performances a joy to watch.
The McKinney Sisters performed their cover of “Nothing But the Blood” at a bluegrass and gospel concert at the Garden Community Church in Moundridge, Kansas. “Nothing But the Blood” is a traditional American hymn that was written by Baptist minister Robert Lowry, and the sisters’ unique take on it really hit the spot with viewers. The cover really took off when the sisters uploaded it to YouTube, and the viral video soon became their most popular performance online.
The McKinney Sisters evidently have no shortage of talent, as each sister can not only sing but play multiple instruments at a high level. This was seen in their cover of the bluegrass favorite “Reuben’s Train,” where Mikyl switches over from mandolin to fiddle. This upbeat number showcases the fleet-fingered licks of Mikyl and Randyl as they take solos on fiddle and banjo.

The McKinney Sisters are a Kansas gospel and bluegrass trio who share their music on their YouTube channel, which is called 17Acts2425. The sisters began uploading their worship performances to YouTube in February 2013. At that point, Daryl, Randyl, and Mikyl were aged 19, 16, and 12, respectively. As of 2026, they are now aged 32, 29, and 25. It’s not unusual for the sisters to change up the instrumental lineup for their performances. Daryl plays guitar and mandolin; Randyl plays banjo, guitar, dobro, and mandolin; and Mikyl plays mandolin and fiddle. The sisters are known for frequent performances throughout Kansas, often at worship events, although they have also toured interstate. For most of the group’s history, they performed as a three-piece, although Randyl and Mikyl have also been known to perform as a duo under the name of The McKinney Sisters.
