How many people can say that Taylor Swift rocked up to play at their engagement party down at the local pub? Californian Swiftie Alex Goldschmidt now has those bragging rights after Tay Tay casually dropped into his small engagement party and sang her song “King of My Heart”, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar.
Needless to say, Alex’s friends’ jaws just about hit the floor when the America’s Sweetheart waltzed in, as he had obviously managed to keep the lid on the surprise. As you can hear in the video below, Swift rearranged the original electropop song to be an intimate acoustic ballad. The arrangement perfectly fit the romantic setting for the performance, with Alex and his fiance Ross Girard soaking up the beautiful moment together with friends and family.
The performance has been viewed 2.7 million times and got a huge reaction from fans online, with comments like “I would have fainted there and then,” and “No mic, no warm-up. Just a pure soul, that’s all it takes.” The completely organic performance really highlighted Swift’s ability as a singer and guitarist, proving that away from the big production of her tours she can still totally slay.
“King of My Heart” is a deep cut from Swift’s sixth studio album Reputation and the romantic theme in the lyrics is just made for an engagement party. Fans have speculated that the lyrics celebrate the relationship between Tay Tay and British actor Joe Alwyn, who dated from 2016 to 2023. Alex Goldschmidt describes himself as a “Taylor Swift anthropologist” on his Instagram alexandergold, which features a range of Swift memes and footage from her concerts. He roped the megastar into the appearance simply by emailing her and asking her to perform. It’s remarkable that Swift even saw the email among the huge haul she no doubt receives.
Alex introduced Taylor at the event by saying “There’s a person who isn’t here but who sort of played a part in all of this, so I would like to welcome and for you to give a warm welcome to, my friend Taylor.” Swift then emerged from another room and said her song “King of My Heart” had a special significance for the couple, adding that “I’ve been off tour for a while but hopefully it’s still alright.” She then addressed Ross, saying “This is from Alex. It’s sung by me but it’s from Alex,” which got a laugh from the small crowd.
Although it was not released as a single, “King of My Heart” was included on every single night of the globe-trotting Reputation stadium tour, which featured 53 dates across the six-month tour. This means that plenty of fans are familiar with the song as the tour drew 2.88 million attendees and became the third highest-grossing tour of all time by a female artist.
