James Corden has had some of the biggest musical stars of the past and the present day singing in his Carpool Karaoke car. Over the years, the segment has grown to be enormously popular, drawing millions of viewers for each guest. However, even in its earliest days, Carpool Karaoke attracted the interest of some of the biggest stars in musical history. On just the sixth-ever episode of Carpool Karaoke, James Corden invited Stevie Wonder to join him for a singalong as they drove around LA.
The two sang along to Stevie’s hits, including ‘Superstition’, ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, and ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’, as they joked around with each other throughout the drive. A moving moment arose when Stevie phoned James’ wife to surprise her. At first, he joked around with her, too, speaking to her in an English accent. Then, James was moved to tears as Stevie sang down the phone to her, using his iconic soulful voice to sing an improvised song about James’ love for his wife.
The video of the duo attracted millions of views, drawing in over 56M to date. Not only did viewers admire Stevie’s singing, commenting, “Stevie Wonder’s voice is still golden after all these years,” but they also admired his easy sense of humor. One viewer commented, “So basically Stevie is the coolest, most laid back person alive.” It seems that James Corden himself was as impressed by Stevie as everyone else, shaking his hand as they parted ways and telling him, “You’re the best, man.”
