The last time Steve Perry sang “Faithfully” live with Journey hits right in the chest, and this new HD upload of the 1991 performance shows why Steve was the greatest voice of his era

Steve Perry performed live with Journey for the last time on November 3, 1991. Recently, a new HD upload of this historic performance appeared on YouTube, capturing the lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry between Steve, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain on Journey’s hit “Faithfully.” Journey has had several lead singers since Perry’s departure in 1998, but they never quite captured the same magic, and this performance showed exactly why it was impossible to replace Steve.

The Californian frontman just has that total package. A gorgeously smooth yet powerful voice, emotional depth for days and natural X-factor. You couldn’t ask for more in a frontman. Steve sings straight from the heart in a way that you can’t teach – you just have to be born with it. Here at The Music Man, we sure are glad to see this classic performance appear online in such high quality!

YouTube channel Boston on MV uploaded an HD cut of Journey’s November 3, 1991 performance of “Faithfully” on August 17, 2026. The clip did some major numbers, drawing nearly 900,000 views in its first month.

There aren’t many high-quality videos of Steve with Journey, but the ones that are available are absolute corkers. The greatest live cut on YouTube from the band is their 1981 rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin’” in Houston. The energy in the room is absolutely electric, with Steve fronting the band with a breezy magnetism. It’s a massive song to pull off vocally, but he makes it all seem easy, and the band’s groove is nothing short of molten.

Journey issued “Faithfully” in April 1983 as the second single from their eighth studio album Frontiers. The track was penned by keyboardist Jonathan Cain.
The Music Man readers might be interested to hear that Cain has said he began the tune with the line “highway run into the midnight sun,” which he wrote on a napkin while on the band’s tour bus. The following day, he finished the song in half an hour.
“Faithfully” was a smash hit for Journey and was certified six-times Platinum by the RIAA in the US. The song was a highlight of Steve’s work with Journey, as his emotional vocal performance was central to the success of the romantic power ballad.
