When Matthew Broderick appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2016, from the start it was clear his appearance was going to be entertaining. “You’ve done eleven Broadway shows?” Stephen asked his guest. “I think it’s less than that…” Matthew quipped back. Soon the pair discover they have a shared desire to play Eliza Doolittle from ‘My Fair Lady’ onstage, and it’s not long before they’re both giving their best rendition of a song from that very musical!
In what the video’s title humorously dubs “a completely impromptu duet,” the pair are soon up on their feet and singing ‘Wouldn’t It Be Loverly’ together, even holding hands and genuinely looking as though they’re having the time of their lives. In a hilarious twist, four kid actors dressed up as street urchins from the musical then run onstage, throwing rose petals over Stephen and Matthew and sending the audience into fits of laughter.
With the video’s views rolling in by the thousand since it was uploaded, comments from viewers from all over the world have also come flooding in thick and fast, with many praising both Matthew’s sweet nature and Stephen’s surprisingly good singing voice. “That was so sweet, I adore Matthew,” reads one of the video’s most popular comments, whilst another says, “That’s some real entertainment, really fun to watch.”
Some of the video’s commenters also make reference to another of Matthew’s famous musical turns – although one from much longer ago than 2016! In the video below, you can see him as the titular character in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off from 1986; in this iconic scene, Ferris is miming to some famous songs, including The Beatles’ ‘Twist and Shout’, and although it might not actually be Matthew’s voice we hear, he certainly does a good job of making the scene entertaining!
Even if you’re not a fan of Matthew Broderick, the two videos above mean that you surely can’t deny he is a great actor and vocalist. Whether he’s miming to The Beatles in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or singing songs from My Fair Lady with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, we always know for sure that Matthew will put on an entertaining performance!
