This uni student became a deadset internet legend for what he did with a humble set of PVC pipes, and you better believe Snubby J can make those bad boys sing! The young musician’s weird and wonderful hit percussion medley made him into YouTube royalty, attracting 26 million views on the platform. He played 13 hit songs in just 6 minutes on his custom PVC pipe instrument, and the crowd’s hype reaction made the whole thing pop.
Snubby J busted out all the classics like the Super Mario Bros theme, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”, Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” and even Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” He kept the best bit for the end, though, when his buddy Quin hit the stage, and they brought the house down with an epic duet on Europe’s “The Final Countdown.”
Snubby J uploaded the performance all the way back on November 20, 2010, so it’s a classic YouTube moment by this point. He gave the performance at the Del Rey South Talent Show at Loyola Marymount University, and as many comments pointed out – he sure must have been a tough act to follow! In addition to his genius idea to play hits on PVC pipes, Snubby J is also a superb musician and performer, and he really knocked the performance out of the park.
The video attracted nearly 18,000 comments, with viewers adding their appreciation through comments such as “For some reason I keep coming back to this video” and “I loved the confidence he had once Quin joined him. Honestly props for having fun while being amazing.” Snubby J has produced several hit YouTube videos, with his second most popular video being his Daft Punk medley played on PVC pipes.
Snubby J’s real name is Kent Jenkins, and he describes himself as a multi-disciplinary artist. While his videos showcase his talents on several instruments, Snubby J’s signature is definitely delivering the goods on his custom PVC pipe instrument.
Snubby J built the instrument with his father and calls the unique instrument the RimbaTubes. The musician kicked off his online journey as a hobby YouTuber in 2007 but has since hit the big time with international live and TV appearances.
Snubby J’s most popular video remains his PVC pipe talent show medley, which he credited the Blue Man Group as being the inspiration for. Snubby J dreamed of one day collaborating with the famous performance art trio. He eventually realized his dream by producing a multi-episode web series with the Blue Man Group that chronicled his journey as a musician.
