Sabrina Carpenter joins forces with Earth, Wind & Fire for show-stopping surprise medley

It’s always incredible when genres collide, even more so when multi-generational talents join forces to put on a surprise, show-stopping performance. That was certainly the case when Sabrina Carpenter unexpectedly joined forces with R&B/disco legends Earth, Wind & Fire for a last-minute surprise set at 2025’s Lollapalooza festival.

Performing a medley of two of the band’s greatest hits, “Let’s Groove” and “September,” Sabrina and the band absolutely nailed their set, despite having only 24 hours’ notice of their generation-defying collaboration! Their surprise set has gone YouTube viral, amassing more than 381,000 views to date – and Music Man readers can watch the magic unfold in the video below.

With the festival held in Earth, Wind & Fire’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois, the old-school legends join the modern hitmaker for a performance that truly captures the magic of their 70s heyday.

Sabrina, who honored the band by writing on social media, “[they] raised me on the greatest songs of all time; true soul moving timeless music,” looks genuinely over the moon to share the stage with her heroes; handing them the limelight during her own set, dancing around the stage whilst adding her own backing vocals and verses into their classic mix.

But, as incredible as their set may be, the occasion is made even more spectacular by the hidden backstory behind their collab.

Philip Bailey, frontman for Earth, Wind & Fire since 1972, spilled the beans to Vulture. He revealed, “It was one of those kinds of things that happened in 24 hours. We had to really turn this thing around.

“They sent a private plane for us and our entourage. We hopped a plane at seven in the morning, went in, and had the rehearsal. It was very quick and kind of sketchy. I was almost concerned about it. But by that evening, they had dialed everything in, and [Sabrina] did her homework on what verses she was going to take. We went out there and floated on all that energy.

“Everybody was on a tight schedule. We didn’t even have time to run over the performance thoroughly. There were things that weren’t right during the run-through, so my people stayed there and we trusted that they would get all that stuff ready in due time.

“Sometimes things work, and oftentimes they don’t. [Sabrina’s] energy and our energy were very compatible and complementary to one another. How she puts her show together, in terms of how it accelerates and builds, was fantastic. Where she chose to put our segment was perfect.

“We were honored to be asked and very appreciative to her and to her fans for embracing these moments we were able to share.”
