When YouTube musician Alex Melton unleashed his pop punk take on the Sabrina Carpenter tune ‘Espresso’, few people expected it to work. The original version of the song is instantly recognizable as a breezy, summery classic of modern pop, to the extent that successfully transforming it into a different genre – particularly pop punk – seems like an impossible task.
Even the most dubious of viewers, however, were eating their words when they finally heard the cover for themselves. Rather than keeping the style of the original and adding a series of overdone pop punk clichés, Melton had reinvented the song entirely, making it sound as though it were from the back catalogue of an artist like Fall Out Boy or blink-182 rather than a pop princess.
Despite only being uploaded a matter of days ago, the cover has quickly gained traction online, with tens of thousands of fans flocking to Melton’s YouTube channel to hear this epic genre twist moment for themselves. “In a sea of AI-generated covers, this guy blows them all out of the water,” reads one of the many complimentary comments underneath the video.
As Music Man readers will probably be able to guess given the quality of the cover, meanwhile, this is not the first time Melton has taken a pop song and transformed it into a pop punk classic. The most popular video on his YouTube channel, for instance, is his emo take on Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’; to date, the cover has racked up a whopping three million views on YouTube alone.
But of all the covers on his channel, right now it is surely Alex Melton’s take on Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ that is capturing the attention of viewers worldwide. As one YouTube viewer put it, this cover is so good that Sabrina Carpenter needs to hear it for herself!
Alex Melton has proven himself a creative force, transforming Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” into a pop‑punk anthem that’s won thousands of fans overnight. To hear the viral cover and discover more from this rising talent, check the useful links below this paragraph.
