When Raye released her song ‘The Thrill is Gone’ as a double single in 2022, it quickly became one of the most lauded tracks she had released among both critics and her fanbase. A few weeks ago, meanwhile, she uploaded a video of her rendition of the tune at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Playing alongside a full orchestra, the performance was nothing short of spellbinding, and the internet has gone wild for this new live version.
Beginning with a two and a half minute instrumental section played by the orchestra, it is when Raye’s instantly recognizable vocals kick in that the performance becomes absolutely jaw-dropping. Her live energy and silky smooth vocals blend perfectly with the orchestral elements and the huge choir who joins her onstage, and it is difficult to take your eyes off the singer as she really gets into the performance.
Raye has been lauded as one of the most original pop artists to emerge in recent years, and this performance confirms that without a doubt. The song’s melodies are stunning but unpredictable, and Raye clearly has the audience in the palm of her hand as the song’s emotion-wracked lyrics trip off her tongue.
Several other performances from the same Royal Albert Hall gig have also emerged on YouTube, further emphasizing Raye’s talent for live performance and spine-tingling songwriting. Take the video below, for instance, which shows her first song from her set, ‘Oscar Winning Tears’. Preceded by another dramatic orchestral section, it shows the extent to which Raye was clearly born to perform her own music.
I have to confess, however, Music Man readers, that my favourite performance to emerge from Raye’s Royal Albert Hall gig so far is that of ‘The Thrill is Gone’. From the singer’s effortless vocals to the dramatic orchestral segments, the rendition is absolutely flawless, and it is no wonder that the internet has already fallen in love with it!
Raye’s Royal Albert Hall rendition cements her status as one of pop’s most original voices — a spellbinding performance that demands repeat listens. To explore the live video, interviews and more from this extraordinary artist, check the useful links below.
