10-year-old bluesman Quinn Sullivan enjoyed the performance of a lifetime when blues legend Buddy Guy dropped in to join his festival set and shredded it up with the young prodigy. The way Buddy first waved a towel at the kid as if he was too smokin’ for the stage to handle was a super cute way to begin, but the fiery licks that the two bluesmen shared next were anything but cute. And we have to give it up for young Sullivan, because holding your own onstage with a blues icon sure ain’t easy!
The performance was all the more impressive as the pair teamed up on Sullivan’s original song, “Buddy’s Blues”. Not only just a guitarist but also an accomplished singer-songwriter at just 10 years old! The kid has some crazy level of talent. We also have to give it up for Guy here, as he was all class throughout the performance. Rather than trying to take centre stage, Guy played a supporting role on guitar, letting the youngster be the main event on stage that day.
This festival appearance was no sudden discovery. Their connection started two years earlier, in 2007, when an 8-year-old Sullivan met Guy backstage at the Zeiterion Theater in the youngster’s hometown of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Sullivan later recalled that Guy autographed his guitar, listened to him play a few licks, and invited the young talent to join him on stage that night. That impromptu jam kicked off a lasting mentorship that quickly moved from local stages to major festivals.
Guy was serious about nurturing the young artist. Sullivan contributed a guitar solo to Guy’s 2008 record Skin Deep. The musical favor was returned when Guy added guest guitar to Sullivan’s debut album, Cyclone, in 2011. These early recording sessions gave Sullivan direct exposure to premier musicianship, grounding him in authentic blues while helping him develop his own voice on the instrument. See Guy and Sullivan playing together on the night they met at the Zeiterion Theater.
The festival clip of “Buddy’s Blues” has racked up over one million views, sparking admiration from guitar fans stunned by such a mature feel from a ten-year-old. Viewers added comments such as “goosebumps that all i can say, OMG!” and “Maybe Stevie Ray has been re-incarnated?”
Mentorship has always been the lifeblood of the blues, carrying traditions forward across generations. Guy learned from pioneers like Muddy Waters and later influenced icons like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, and he treated Sullivan as the next link in that chain. Their musical connection would later reach platforms like the 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival, showing that Sullivan could bring the right stuff on any stage.
