An 18-minute acoustic Post Malone concert is a guaranteed recipe for some good vibes. The New York hitmaker crooned his way through four fan favorites at his Tiny Desk Concert, and the sound of his voice with the four-piece choir was just heavenly. Post fronted the band with an acoustic guitar, and his aching voice was just made for this kind of intimate format. He opened the show with the ballad “Sunflower,” and hearing his voice in its raw form without any studio tricks is exactly what fans wanted to hear.
Before starting the second song, “I Fall Apart,” Post admitted he was “super nervous,” which is quite surprising given that he makes his living slaying stadiums. The stripped-back format certainly left Post with nowhere to hide, but he rose to the challenge and delivered a touching rendition of his old-school breakup anthem. The Music Man loves Post not only for his huge songwriting talent, but also the ability to seamlessly revamp his old material to match his new vibe, which is not easy to do.
NPR Music uploaded Post’s Tiny Desk Concert to YouTube on August 15, 2023. It has since become one of the most popular Tiny Desk Concerts, as it racked up a neat 23.8 million views. Fans loved hearing Post’s acoustic set and added comments such as “Everything Post Malone does, he acts like it’s the most fun he has ever had in his life. A true gift to humanity” and “This is so good! His natural voice is just incredible and filled with passion. I want a full album with it.”
Post fans have got to enjoy a number of gorgeous acoustic performances from the New York star in recent years. His solo acoustic show One Night in Rome produced a number of gems, one of them being the cover “Last Kiss,” which was also famously covered by Pearl Jam. The Music Man readers may recall that Post has covered a number of Pearl Jam songs, and his emotive voice is just perfect for singing this old-time ballad.
Post dropped into NPR for his Tiny Desk Concert as part of the promotional cycle for his fifth studio album, Austin. He opened the set with his old school favorites “Sunflower,” “I Fall Apart,” and “Circles,” before closing the show with the fourth single from Austin, “Enough is Enough.” After the first song, Post admitted that his voice was worn out at the Tiny Desk Concert due to his recent touring commitments. He definitely didn’t have quite his usual lithe vocal approach on display, but the raspiness of his voice did work to add a little extra flavor to the folky style of the material.
