Playing for Change Band’s reggae twist on this Bob Dylan classic goes viral as fans call it a stunningly beautiful tribute to the late great guitarist Robbie Robertson

The Playing for Change Band dropped the most heartfelt and beautiful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” The group recorded the viral cover in tribute to the late great Robbie Robertson, who played guitar for Dylan and The Band in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The Playing for Change Band delivered a loose and funky reggae rendition of the classic folk tune. The yearning vocals of Jason Tamba and Mermans Mosengo created a sweet and melancholy vibe on the song, driving the performance to 2.6 million views.

The band featured musicians from the Congo, Italy, and the US, creating a collaboration that brought a unique flavor to the Dylan hit. Many groups have tried their hand at “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” over the years, but the Playing for Change Band really created something special here, with the chemistry of the band and those haunting harmonies hitting the spot just right. The Music Man always has time to jam some Dylan, and the band really did Robertson proud here.

Playing for Change uploaded their “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” cover on August 23, 2023, a few weeks after Robertson’s passing on August 9. Listeners really appreciated the tribute and added comments such as “Fellas, this is just a stunningly beautiful tribute to Robbie, gone far too soon. Thank you for this heartfelt gift. It helps” and “Robbie was one of the greats. The Band in my view the greatest band ever, their music was far ahead of its time. RIP.”

Playing for Change aren’t just fans of Robertson – the great guitarist actually appeared on the channel. Robertson joined The Beatles legend Ringo Starr in 2019 for a rendition of The Band’s signature hit “The Weight” on Playing for Change. Starr’s beat and Robertson’s licks proved to be quite the hit on YouTube, as their take on the song hit 44 million views, becoming one of the most popular clips on the channel.

Robbie Robertson became Bob Dylan’s guitarist in 1965 and played with Dylan on and off up until his final tour with the influential songsmith in 1974. Robertson was also a member of The Band from 1965 to 1977 and later forged a solo career. The Music Man readers may recall that The Band initially gained traction as Dylan’s backing group before emerging as a fully fledged recording act in their own right from 1968 onward. Robertson wrote many of The Band’s biggest hits, including their three most streamed songs “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and “Up on Cripple Creek.”
