Paul McCartney lost Lennon and Harrison, Nirvana lost Kurt. Who better to team up than on a song for charity in the wake of Superstorm Sandy? You can tell Paul is so stoked to be part of a band again as he introduces Dave, Krist, and Pat, and tells the story of how he realized he was “in the middle of a Nirvana reunion.” Paul took lead vocals and played a quirky cigar box guitar on their collab “Cut Me Some Slack.” With the thunderous groove of Nirvana behind him, the chemistry of the four-piece was undeniable.
In addition to the nostalgic vibes of seeing the boys play as a band together again, fans loved to see Dave Grohl return to the drum kit. The years melt away whenever he sits behind the kit for Nirvana, and you can tell he feels right at home while bringing the thunder on the kit with his boys. The Music Man has to say that not only was this reunion super heartwarming, but that Paul was the perfect fit to front the Seattle legends!
Fan channel nevadch uploaded the cut of “Cut Me Some Slack” to YouTube, where it hit 1.6 million views. Fans gave plenty of love for the reunion and added comments such as “Paul McCartney. What a guy. 73 years old; looks 53, and sounds 33” and “Now imagine if Kurt was somewhere jamming with George and John.”
The Nirvana boys are no strangers to The Beatles. The band’s early song “About a Girl” was famously heavily inspired by the Fab Four. Frontman Kurt Cobain wrote the song in 1988 after spending an entire afternoon listening to the band’s second US album Meet the Beatles! It seems the songwriting of the Fab Four rubbed off on Kurt that day, as critics noted the melody of “About a Girl” was one of his strongest early writing efforts. The band performed their most popular version of the song for MTV Unplugged in 1993.
Paul McCartney released his Nirvana collaboration “Cut Me Some Slack” on December 14, 2012. The Music Man readers might be interested to hear that the song was written for the soundtrack of Dave Grohl’s documentary film “Sound City”. “Cut Me Some Slack” featured Paul on lead vocals and cigar box guitar. The three surviving members, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear, acted as his band for the recording. Paul and Nirvana debuted “Cut Me Some Slack” live at the 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief, which is the performance shown at the top of the article.
