Our Last Night is a post-hardcore band from Hollis, New Hampshire. Formed in 2004, the band has become as well known for their covers as for their original music. Interestingly, the band was late to the covers game. They only started giving pop and rap songs a bit of a heavy nudge and releasing them on YouTube as stopgaps between albums in 2013.
Our Last Night have certainly made up for their late start. To date, they have 80 covers on their popular YouTube channel. Given the quantity, some of the covers work better than others. There are even lists of their most successful and least satisfactory covers. The video below, an Ed Sheeran cover, is one of the better ones. It is very popular.
Our Last Night released their cover of Ed Sheeran's Shape Of You in April 2017. It has nearly 26 million YouTube views. Clearly there is an audience for rock covers of pop songs! And it's not like the popularity of the Ed Sheeran cover is a fluke. Some of their covers are seen by thousands, a number of them have more that 10 million views and some, like their cover of Adele's Skyfall (James Bond) sit with around 20m views. These are big numbers, but there's more.
Our last Night's cover of Imagine Dragons' Radioactive has clocked up 30m views and their cover of Katy Perry's Dark Horse just pips their Ed Sheeran cover with 27m views. These covers are even more popular than Our Last Night's original songs. Sunrise, the band's most watched video, is their fifth most popular (22m views). No wonder many people think of Our Last Night as a covers band. You can see their massively popular cover of Imagine Dragon's Radioactive in the video below.
Masked Wolf's Astronaut In The Ocean is another popular Our Last Night cover. In a year, it has received 22m views. When one considers that their most watched covers are between 5 and 9 years old, it is likely that the Masked Wolf cover will become their most popular video.
What of Our Last Night's less successful covers? Scenedaddy.com includes covers of songs by Post Malone, Drake, and Camila Cabella in this list, with their cover of the Baha Men's Who Let the Dogs Out as the very worst song. It's badly arranged, it doesn't suit their style and, as Scene Daddy comments, "The screaming just sounds like an angry small dog yelling at their owner".
Our Last Night remain a prolific original band and an even more prolific covers band. In the last two months they've covered Vanessa Carlton, Ricky Martin, Oasis, Bonnie Tyler, Kate Bush (Running Up That Hill, obviously), Abba, and Fleetwood Mac. Graveyard, the band's most recent original song, was released three months ago.
Back in 2013, when they recorded their first cover (Adele's Skyfall), there was no way that Our Last Night could have predicted that they were embarking on a side-line that would become so productive and so popular that it risked overshadowing their own music. It's been quite a ride.
