Olivia Rodrigo’s Grammy’s performance of “Drivers License” will hit you right in the chest – this is why she’s a megastar!

Olivia Rodrigo sure knows how to pull on your heartstrings! The 21-year-old star gave an emotional performance of her breakout hit “Drivers License” at the Grammy Awards, and boy did she hit the mark. Rodrigo kicked off the song with a heartfelt first verse over a sparse piano accompaniment. She then masterfully built up the dynamics throughout the song, leading up to the climactic rocking outro, where we really got to hear her wail.

The Californian hitmaker can really put on a mesmerizing stage show, and this was on full display at the Grammys. Her live vocals were also totally on point – she’s got the whole package, folks. The Music Man readers will definitely want to tune into her gorgeous soft falsetto vocals over the piano part at the end of the song.

Rodrigo performed “Drivers License” at the 64th Grammy Awards and uploaded the clip to her YouTube on April 19, 2022. The performance caused quite a stir online and blew up to 13 million views. Viewers loved the show and added comments such as “It’s kinda weird how the live versions sound better than the studio version. I’m simply amazed” and “This performance was by far her best. Her vocals, stage presence and the visuals are just amazing!”

Rodrigo can really own the stage and has it covered both with a full band and with her solo performances. In 2024, she performed “Vampire” in a solo piano arrangement, which really showed off her heavenly vocals. The song, which was the lead single from her second album Guts, also displayed her impressive piano chops.

Rodrigo released “Drivers License” on January 8, 2021, as her debut single. The Music Man readers may recall that the song quickly topped the charts in the US, which made her the youngest artist in history to debut at the top of the chart. Rodrigo eventually scored a six-times Platinum certification for the single in her homeland, and the song also went Platinum over much of Europe and North America. Rodrigo spoke to Uproxx about the origin of “Drivers License,” saying, “I was going through a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted. Putting all those feelings into a song made everything seem so much simpler and clearer—and at the end of the day, I think that’s the whole purpose of songwriting. There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song. It’s truly my favourite thing in the world.”
