Eddie Vedder’s nothing short of a legend when it comes to rock vocals. But when the Pearl Jam frontman invited his 20-year-old daughter Olivia Vedder on stage for a live rendition of their “Flag Day” soundtrack collab, “My Father’s Daughter,” the Vedder family talent ran crystal clear and spellbinding, the live clip amassing over 623,000 views to date!
This was Olivia’s vocal debut, and the pressure was certainly piled high. Sharing the stage with her rock-icon dad, Olivia was also joined by Glen Hansard (co-writer of “My Father’s Daughter”), Andrew Watt (whose repertoire includes work with Ozzy Osbourne and Miley Cyrus), and Chad Smith, drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers.
But Olivia nailed this performance – topping this gracefully calm ballad with her soft and flowery voice, tinged with tones that would fit seamlessly into a ’60s folk-pop hit.
“My Father’s Daughter” is one of eight songs co-written by Eddie Vedder and Glen Hansard for the “Flag Day” movie soundtrack – a 2021 drama flick directed by Sean Penn, and the long-awaited follow-up to Eddie and Glen’s last collab with Sean, following his 2007 film, “Into The Wild.” Music Man readers can watch Eddie perform some “Into The Wild” songs live in the clip below!
Olivia is set to turn 21 this June. Eddie Vedder and his model/activist wife Jill also share another daughter, Harper, who will turn 17 this year.
Besides following in her father’s musical footsteps, Olivia is also a Global Citizen Youth Ambassador, advocating for various social and political causes online, including raising climate change awareness and prompting young adults to register to vote.
Back in 2007, Eddie Vedder spilled the beans on Olivia’s birth, revealing the unexpectedly mix-matched emotions tangled in the new life of his firstborn. He commented, “It wasn’t the glowy lovey-dovey. It fueled my anger. All of a sudden, I saw the world as her world that they were [messing] with. That really p****d me off.”
He also predicted Olivia’s rise to becoming an activist and ambassador when he said, “Do you force your kids to pay attention to what’s going on, or do you let them live their lives outside of it?… My hope is that my child is a strong activist. That would make me most proud.”
Olivia Vedder’s captivating vocal debut alongside her legendary father Eddie Vedder proved she is an emerging talent to watch. Her performance of “My Father’s Daughter” resonated profoundly with audiences, offering a glimpse into her promising musical future.
