Metallica showed they can still bring the thunder big time with a defiant performance of their classic “Master of Puppets” in a torrential downpour. The Four Horsemen played in Munich, Germany on May 24, 2024, as a wall of water fell on them from the heavens. “Master of Puppets” is well known among musicians to be a tough tune to master at the best of times, but having to play the intricate riffs of the high-speed thrasher while soaked from head to toe was really quite a task.
The ‘Tallica boys were more than up to the job though, with frontman James Hetfield driving the band hard with his relentless rhythm playing. As always, the 60-year-old singer sounded absolutely amazing on the mic. It’s really tough for a metal singer to stay in top form vocally after more than five decades of relentless touring, but somehow the Man of Metal has managed it. Make sure to watch at 0:18 in the video, where lightning strikes over the arena in perfect timing with the intro riff.
Drummer Lars Ulrich and bassist Robert Trujillo laid down a rumbling groove, unbothered by the fact they had to have a bath while doing it. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett had the toughest job of the night, having to shred the 30-second bridge solo of “Master of Puppets” with a slick wet fretboard. The solo is infamously one of the more demanding lead parts in the Metallica discography, but the 61-year-old rocker managed to hold it down despite the challenges of the Munich weather.

The gig caused quite a stir among Metallica fans, who added comments such as “This is not a performance, it is a statement. Rain, thunder, aging… all void. Nothing can stop Metallica” and “This will become one of the most iconic performances of Metallica’s whole career.” The band have been very generous with their fans by uploading high-quality live videos of their 2024 tour, including a cracking performance of “Am I Evil?”, featuring the original songwriter, Diamond Head guitarist Brian Tatler.
