Normally if you want to see Maroon 5, you better head to a stadium, but one 18-year-old Maroon 5 fan got the surprise of her life when her favourite band rocked out at her graduation party. Californian teenager Kate’s older brothers arranged for the pop superstars to play at her party and kept it all under wraps by claiming that the stage was set up for a small-time indie band to play.
Kate was astounded when Maroon 5’s hit “Moves Like Jagger” instead came out of the PA and the curtains dropped to reveal the hit-makers right there in her backyard. Before the show her brother said “we’re gonna have to be ready to catch her when she inevitably faints… she’s gonna freak out.” As you can see in the viral video below, Kate did indeed freak out when her favourite band appeared, but thankfully didn’t faint and instead rocked out with her friends.
The video, which shows an ecstatic Kate with friends and family all enjoying the once in a lifetime moment, has been viewed 276 million times. It was a great moment for Kate to blow off steam, as when her parents got divorced, she became the responsible child and was always worried about keeping the peace. Her brothers organized the Maroon 5 show to help her let down her hair before she went away to study at college.
Maroon 5 have done a number of surprise performances in the past. As frontman Adam Levine explains in the first video, the band got the idea from their film clip “Sugar”, which you can watch below. The Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin made the clip for the band and revisited the theme of his famous film by arranging for the band to crash real weddings in Los Angeles with surprise performances.
Maroon 5 loved the experience and decided they wanted to take the idea of surprise performances and run with it. And there’s one Californian teen who is no doubt very happy that they did. The end result was a real magical moment for Kate, her friends and the band. The whole performance was professionally recorded and filmed, which is quite a sight in a suburban backyard.
The band performed one of their biggest hits at the backyard gig, “Moves Like Jagger”, which is their sixth most streamed song on Spotify with 1.1 billion streams. The disco and electropop song was the fourth single from the reissue of the band’s third studio album Hands All Over. The title and lyrics reference the famous on-stage dance moves of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
The song, which was released in 2011, went Diamond in the US and became Maroon 5’s second number one single in the country. The song was also a critical success for the band and eventually became one of the biggest selling singles of all time, with 14.4 million copies sold.
