This was Madonna’s first appearance on Letterman since her controversial, expletive-ridden interview in 1994, driving the pressure for this ‘comeback’ performance sky-high. To reclaim her name among Letterman viewers, Madonna dared to do something she’d never tried on stage before: playing guitar live before an audience for the very first time; her debut gig singing self-accompanied by an instrument.
With her career stretching back almost 20 years, it’s almost wild to consider Madonna had never dropped the mic for a guitar performance before this. But, as it turns out, Madonna had, comparatively, only just started learning guitar, being pretty much a beginner at the time of this recording.
Fussing with the battery pack on her clip-on microphone, forewarning the audience, “If this goes wrong…”, and calling the entire experience “nerve-wracking,” Madonna uses every trick in the book to delay the performance for as long as she can. Her nerves are blindingly obvious; a rare sight for an A-list chart-topper, and she seems unsure how to move forward and truly start the performance.
But once she powers through her anxiety, Madonna crafts a concert that would stun and inspire multiple generations of pop listeners across the country.
Strumming four simple chords on her acoustic guitar, Madonna’s vocals take the backseat for the first time in her life as she pours all of her focus into the instrumental flow. Her lyrical melodies ring out as if singing is her second nature, yet lack the true power fans have come to expect from the star as she multitasks singing and strumming before her silent live audience.
