Hear Luna Lee’s Electrifying Take On Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” On Korean Folk Instrument

The spirit of Jimi Hendrix is alive and well, thanks to rockers like Luna Lee! The YouTuber created an electrifying version of the guitar god’s classic “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” on gayageum, which is a traditional Korean instrument. Don’t expect it to sound like the 16th century, though, as Lee hooked her instrument up to a guitar amp to get her Hendrix tribute really cooking! She really shreds the solos, which is something I thought I’d never say about gayageum music.

Lee’s cover of Hendrix’s signature song begins with a chill vibe, as she draws a clean and traditional tone from her gayageum. She switches up the mood quickly though, as soon as a driving rock drum beat drops in. Lee then cranks her tone to 11 about 90 seconds into the tune, and things get really rocking. The Korean YouTuber is a real master of her instrument, and really does justice to the spirit of Hendrix with a creative interpretation of his iconic song.

Lee’s take on “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” was a massive hit on YouTube, attracting 5.5 million views. This made the video not only her most popular upload but also the most popular video featuring a gayageum arrangement on the entire platform. Lee’s take on Hendrix is one of several viral videos on her channel that feature her gayageum arrangements of classic rock songs.

Rock fans were in awe of Lee’s skills, adding comments such as “On a scale of 1 to 10, this creation rates a solid 11. I have seen Jimi Hendrix live twice and the spirit of his music is alive and well in you. Keep up the awesome work!” and “My favourite so far. She gets all of Hendrix’s intent but adds so much more using her instrument. A genius.” Lee’s second most popular video is her gayageum arrangement of Dire Straits’ “Sultans Of Swing.”

Since creating her YouTube channel in 2009, Lee has built up quite a following online, attracting 221,000 subscribers to her channel. Her cover of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” was so popular she actually redid her cover in 2019. In the new version, she uses the overdriven guitar tone on her gayageum more liberally, giving the arrangement a different vibe.

Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, to a family that “loves traditional Korean music.” She began playing piano at age 10 before her mother introduced her to gayageum at age 12. She subsequently formally studied Korean traditional music and gained a master’s degree in gayageum from Hanyang University. She has since moved to the United States and is now based in Texas.
