Oasis’ shambles of a reunion has got The Music Man looking back at one of frontman Liam Gallagher’s wackiest viral moments – that 4M-times-viewed moment he rocked up to a primary school to answer some children’s questions for a Noisey interview titled, “Liam Gallagher vs. Cute Kids.”
We can’t bash these 5-10 year olds for not knowing the national hero they were facing; born in the post-Oasis era and confronted with a scruffy, parka-plastered Manc who acts like everyone’s favorite uncle, cracking jokes about being proud of his loudest farts.
With a classroom of children squashed together on beanbags, Liam commences one of the most wholesome public moments of his career, taking his first question from Beauty and the Beast-loving Mia, who asked, “What’s your favourite Disney movie?” The dad of three nineties/noughties kids and one 2013-born daughter boiled down his decades of jarring kids’ entertainment, revealing once and for all, “I like Finding Nemo.”
Making this clip internet gold is the fact Liam doesn’t tone down his rough-cut mannerisms for a minute. He turns to another kid, “You look like trouble, don’t ya,” tells another, “Go on, geezer,” and another, “Go on, man,” as if he’s perusing his local pub for an unclaimed seat. But when a young boy asks, “If you play a good song at a concert do you get sweets after?” Liam scrapes out his sex and drugs anecdotes for the most PG answer he can give, “Yeah, sort of.”
The Brit-pop god didn’t miss a chance to swipe back at his brother in the midst of their notorious breakup, telling the kids, “I don’t play instruments, I just sing, but I had a brother who played the guitar.” One girl piped up, “I know his name: Noel,” and Liam hit back, hilariously: “He’s naughty. He’s not much bigger than you, actually.”
His chemistry with the preschoolers is unexpectedly heart-melting. After a super-cute moment when pipsqueak Mia raps a line of Big Shaq’s “Man’s Not Hot,” Liam comes into his element talking about loud farts and making every kid in the room giggle. After all these years, it’s clear Liam hasn’t lost a glimmer of his ’90s grunge attitude, telling a curious boy that he didn’t work hard at school, and confirming, “If you wanna be a rockstar, look out the window, stare at the clouds and do loud farts.”
Amazingly, the kids’ questions were all in all more intelligent than some of Liam’s answers, including “What song do you most enjoy playing?”, “What’s your favorite part of the world?” and “Who’s your favorite Premier League player?” After some football banter and a brief chat about getting blown off the Eiffel Tower, it’s clear Liam is still a big kid at heart.
